Bideford's medieval Long Bridge -- 677 feet of 24 arches spanning the Torridge -- is one of Devon's most photographed landmarks. The town's Quay, the pannier market, the car parks on Clovelly Road and Cooper Street, and the East-the-Water area on the opposite bank of the river are the main lockout callout locations. The Burton Art Gallery and the Victoria Park waterfront generate visitor lockouts in the warmer months.
Westward Ho! (2 miles north) is a busy coastal resort with a large beach and extensive car parking -- in summer it is one of the most active lockout spots in the Bideford area. Appledore (2 miles north-east), a historic shipbuilding village and RNLI station, and Instow (3 miles north) on the opposite bank of the Torridge are also regularly covered. 📍Appledore & RNLI Village
Appledore (2 miles north-east) is a beautifully preserved shipbuilding village with narrow lanes and a working RNLI station. The village car park and the riverside area generate visitor and residential callouts. The narrow lanes mean I need to park at the edge of the village -- I know the best approach routes.
📍Northam & East-the-Water
Northam (between Bideford and Westward Ho!) and East-the-Water (the east bank of the Torridge, connected by the Long Bridge) are both residential areas generating spare-key and programming callouts. Northam also has the Burrows (a large common and golf course) that generates occasional visitor callouts.
📍Instow & Torridge Estuary
Instow (3 miles north) is a yacht and sailing village on the Torridge/Taw confluence with a long sandy beach at low tide. The car parks at Instow are summer lockout spots. The North Devon Coast AONB path between Instow and Braunton is a popular walking route.
📍Clovelly & Hartland Heritage Coast
Clovelly (11 miles west) -- the famous privately owned car-free cobbled village -- has a large car park at the top of the cliff from which visitors descend on foot. The Clovelly car park is an occasional lockout location for visitors to this unique heritage village. Hartland and the remote Atlantic headland are also within my coverage.
